Project Details
The Metro Tunnel is a Victorian Government $11 billion major public transport project that will enable our train network to cater for Melbourne’s population growth. The Metro Tunnel will bring more trains to the outer suburbs and reduce travel times by running the busy Cranbourne, Pakenham and Sunbury lines through a new tunnel. It will include a new end-to-end rail line from Sunbury in the west to Cranbourne/Pakenham in the south east, with bigger and better trains, next generation signalling technology and 5 new stations. A dedicated tunnel from Kensington to South Yarra will also create a direct connection between the west and the south east.
By untangling the City Loop, more trains can run more often across Melbourne. The Metro Tunnel creates room on the network to enable over half a million additional passengers per week across Melbourne’s train network to use the rail system during the peak periods. It will also bring travel time savings to passengers across the suburban and regional lines.
The Metro Tunnel will benefit all Victorians by making it easier to move around the city and visit important destinations such as Melbourne Airport. Connecting the Melbourne Airport Rail into the Metro Tunnel will provide passengers with around a 30-minute service into the CBD and will maximise access for all Victorians.
The new Town Hall and State Library stations in the CBD will revitalise key areas of the city and will change the way people use our train network. These 2 new stations will be directly connected to the City Loop at Melbourne Central and Flinders Street stations, allowing passengers to conveniently interchange between services, just like other metro-style train network.
The Metro Tunnel is a major enhancement to Melbourne’s rail network and will need to integrate with the existing system. A procurement and delivery strategy has been developed to respond to the unique challenges this poses. Rail Projects Victoria is responsible for planning and development of project reference design, site investigations, stakeholder engagement, planning approvals and procurement, through to the construction delivery and project commissioning phases.
