An Optimistic Outlook for the Construction Sector’s Post-COVID-19 Comeback.

Bolstered by the Australian government’s infrastructure-led economic recovery plan

As we forge forward in 2021, there’s no question that COVID-19’s impact on business operations across key industrial sectors was widespread. Despite the construction industry being labelled as an essential service, shaken consumer and investor confidence, coupled with continued weakness in the residential sector and ongoing disruptions, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported a fall of 2.8% in the value of total building work done in 2020.

However, the construction sector is expected to rebound this year, bolstered by the government’s focus on an infrastructure-led economic revival. Announcing new and fast-tracked infrastructure spending, ABS’s seasonally adjusted estimated for total dwellings approved rose 21.6% in February while the value of non-residential building approvals rose by 27.5%.

RLB reports an uplift in total crane counts operating across major city skylines

This encouraging outlook is further supported by Rider Levett Bucknall’s report that crane numbers across the nation’s largest cities have lifted for the first time in two years. With an increase of 16 cranes over the last six months, the total number of cranes across Australian city skylines rose to 691.

Reinforced by strong interstate migration, Brisbane recorded its largest increase in crane numbers since late-2015. The city’s residential construction sector saw residential cranes rise from 50 in the third quarter of 2020 to 71 in the first quarter of 2021. With growth across mixed-use developments replacing dwindling numbers of residential CBD projects, Melbourne also recorded a significant net increase of 16 cranes with a total of 193 in the first quarter of 2021. Sydney continues to have the highest number of cranes with a total of 286 in the first quarter of 2021.

Breaking down crane counts by construction sector, mixed-use, education, civil and civic projects have seen increases in total crane counts. The residential and hotel sectors saw the largest drops while retail and recreation remained relatively steady, a reflection of the pandemic’s inevitable impacts.

We look forward to seeing the resurgence of the construction industry as it regains healthy momentum, supporting direct and indirect employment numbers.
